What is Nilgiri Tea
The word Niligi means “Blue Mountain” and it gets its name from its location. It is grown in the Blue Mountain region of southwestern India mainly, Tamil Nadu. It is a form of black tea made from dark, regular, twisted chestnut brown shoots. It is also called the “fragrant one” for its smooth, strong flavour. Like other teas, it is grown around the year but best harvested when other teas are dormant.
Nilgiri Tea Benefits
All varieties of black teas are rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Drinking Nilgiri tea yields many benefits.
1. Digestive aid and helps in weight loss
If you are one of those people who suffer from indigestion, bloating or acidity then a cup of Nilgiri tea after each meal can help you relieve from these problems. It is rich in caffeine which helps speed up metabolism and also helps the body to process food faster and get rid of unwanted wastes, aiding in weight loss.
2. Fight Cold Symptoms
Nilgiri tea is rich minerals and vitamins and its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory capabilities boost immunity and help fight common cold and flu.
3. Skin Health
Nilgiri tea is rich in antioxidants which protect the cells from degenerating through stress or environmental pollution. Regular consumption slows down the ageing of the skin and keeps the skin fresh making you look younger. It also helps prevent the growth of tumour cells which could lead to cancer.
4. Prevent Heart Diseases
Unhealthy eating habits have led to an increase in LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Nilgiri tea being rich in flavonoids helps improve blood flow, fight against LDL, strengthen the heart and circulatory system hence reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
5. An alternative for Coffee
The caffeine in tea works differently than in coffee. The caffeine in tea releases slowly and lasts longer (up to 6-8 hours) whereas in coffee it is released in one shot into the bloodstream. Also, the amino acid L-theanine in tea is known to relax the mind. It can relax your mind and awaken alertness at the same time. So Nilgiri tea is a healthy alternative for coffee.
Nilgiri Tea was initially grown only in India but stiff competition from other countries has led to low prices for CTC (crush, tear and curl) tea. The Nilgiri tea estates in India have started growing it organically to beat the competition in the global market.
The organically produced tea variants like Orange Pekoe are priced higher than other teas but this refreshing, healthy, and aromatic tea is worth the investment.
